Even before I became an MP I’ve been supporting residents affected by noise from the Stourbridge depot. I’ve taken a number of steps to help mitigate the issues, including pushing the Department for Transport for the new locomotives at Stourbridge to replace the ageing fleet, and working with Chiltern to identify opportunities to reduce noise.
As well as installing new acoustic fencing, Chiltern Railways is implementing a multi-stage plan to reduce the impact of depot operations on the surrounding residential area:
• Interim Generator Solution: A HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) generator is currently in use to power trains overnight, reducing the need for locomotives to idle. This is significantly quieter and has reduced the impact on surrounding residents.
• Shore Power Transition: A £2 million investment in a permanent electrical shore supply is underway. The National Grid (DNO) has authorised the connection and installation is expected within the next 12 months, which will effectively eliminate idling noise by providing silent power for heating, lighting, and cleaning.
I have asked Chiltern to carry out increased engagement with local residents to keep them updated on progression and plans, and they are keen to establish a residents forum.
Thank you to Matthew, Steve and Harry for meeting with me and some affected residents and continuing the work to reduce noise pollution.
