I have signed the Stop Rosebank pledge as it is not just about one oil field, it is about the future that we choose. Rosebank would be the UK’s largest undeveloped oil field, at a time when the science is clearly telling us that we need to move away from the new fossil fuel projects.

I know how important energy security and good jobs are, particularly for communities connected to the North Sea. But projects like Rosebank won’t bring down bills or provide long term stability, not least because we as a country would not own the oil and it would be subject to international market pricing. What will make a real difference is investing in clean, reliable energy and making sure workers are supported every step of the way.

I am committing to opposing the Rosebank development, supporting a properly funded, fair transition for workers and communities, I also back a practical solution like renewables and home insulation.

A lot of people have contacted me about recent reports in the press regarding new oil and gas licences, and I’ve written privately to Andy Burnham to share my concerns about Rosebank, Jackdaw and the wider impact of drilling in the North Sea. I’ll keep pushing for climate action and a secure energy future under our new Prime Minister.

We have a real opportunity to build a cleaner, more secure energy system that works for everyone and stopping Rosebank is part of that.
