Summer should be a time for making memories, spending time together and enjoying everything our local area has to offer. But for many families across Stourbridge, Brierley Hill and Netherton, the cost of days out, meals and activities can quickly add up.

That’s why I’m pleased to see the launch of Labour’s new Great British Summer Savings scheme, which will help families enjoy more affordable trips, treats and experiences throughout the school holidays.

From 25 June until 1 September, VAT will be reduced on children’s menu meals, children’s cinema and theatre tickets, and admission to a wide range of family attractions. The savings are expected to be passed on directly to customers, helping families get more for their money this summer.

Here in our area, that could mean cheaper trips to the cinema at Merry Hill, more affordable visits to local soft play centres, and savings at family friendly cafes, pubs and restaurants. Local theatres and performance venues, including events at Stourbridge Town Hall, are also expected to benefit.

There’s more good news too. Throughout August, children aged five to 15 will be able to travel free on local bus services, helping families get out and about without worrying about transport costs.

I know that many parents have faced difficult choices over recent years as household budgets have been stretched by rising costs. The summer holidays should be a time for fun, not financial stress, and these measures are designed to make it easier for families to enjoy quality time together.

Alongside these summer savings, the Labour Government is taking action to ease pressure on family finances through lower energy bills, free breakfast clubs, expanded childcare, extended free school meals and freezes to prescription charges, fuel duty and rail fares.

As your Member of Parliament, I want every child in Stourbridge, Brierley Hill and Netherton to have the chance to enjoy a great summer, and I hope many local families will be able to take advantage of these savings over the weeks ahead.
