The kindness and community shown by local people over the past 2 days has been phenomenal. I was back at the Town Hall this morning to support residents, and the Prime Minister Andy Burnham came to offer his support too.
He thanked all the volunteers and staff and spoke to many residents affected by the fires. They were grateful that he took the time to visit and speak with them.
We then met with Chief Fire Officer Simon Tuhill to hear about how the emergency services coordinated the response and the challenges they faced in dealing with such an extensive incident.
Fire, police and ambulance crews were praised by the PM for everything they do to keep all of us safe, and it was definitely a morale boost for them.
The PM said he’s already looking at how we can strengthen the country’s resilience to these types of events, as well as ensuring insurance companies properly support those affected.
The cordon remains in place this evening while the fire service continues to work at the scene and people are advised to not try to return to their homes at this time. The Town Hall remains open for enquiries, accommodation, signposting to help and support, and food, clothes, and toiletries are available to those who need them. OSH is continuing to provide accommodation for those in need.
