I have joined colleagues from across Parliament in writing to the Foreign Secretary to urge the Government to take stronger action in response to the continued expansion of illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories.
The expansion of settlements is illegal under international law and undermines the prospects of achieving a just and lasting peace.
In our letter, we have called on the Government to take further steps to ensure that UK policy is fully consistent with international law. This includes ending trade with illegal Israeli settlements so that the UK is not, directly or indirectly, supporting activities that are unlawful under international law.
I believe the UK must be clear that settlements have no legal validity and should not benefit from commercial relationships that risk legitimising or sustaining their expansion. Our trade policy should reflect our long standing commitment to international law.
The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains catastrophic. Far too many civilians have lost their lives, and millions continue to face desperate shortages of food, clean water and medical care. At the same time, violence and intimidation in the occupied West Bank have continued to increase.
Many people across Stourbridge, Brierley Hill and Netherton have contacted me about the conflict and the importance of the UK upholding international law. I am grateful to everyone who has taken the time to write to me and share their views.
I will continue to support measures that uphold international law, protect civilians and defend human rights.
